6 Important Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips for Parents

October 25, 2017

Halloween is right around the corner and of course, all the kids are excited about one thing: trick-or-treating. There is something about the candy that makes kids act all crazy before they’ve even had a bite.

Halloween is just one of those constantly chaotic times for a parent, and there are so many different things that can go wrong, especially when it comes to child safety. It’s difficult to keep up with our kids running around in the dark, especially if you have multiple kids to keep an eye on.

That’s why we’ve put together this list of 6 important trick-or-treating tips safety tips for parents to have at the front of their mind as they go about their Halloween preparations.

1. Make sure your child is visible

It’s important for children to be visible while trick-or-treating. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be a fight. Give your children a choice: Go trick-or-treating before the sun goes down, wear a light colored costume, or wear reflective running lights or glow sticks.

2. Make sure costumes aren’t too long

Hand me downs can be a lifesaver but make sure that your children’s costumes aren’t too long or fit improperly. It’s easier to quickly hem a uniform or change out a poorly fitted mask than repeatedly picking up your child when they trip or adjusting their mask when they have difficulty seeing.

3. Check the candy

Make sure to look through all the candy when you get home.Throw away all of the candy that’s not in its original wrapping. Even if you think you can trust your neighbors, it’s better safe than sorry. In fact, most of the tainted candy incidences on Halloween involve people the child knew.

4. Plan a route ahead of time

Planning a route and a meeting point beforehand is useful if a child gets lost or separated from the group. Review the route with your child ahead of time and make sure that they are familiar with the area.

5. Use the buddy system

Keeping up with overexcited children can be exhausting. Add that to a dark environment and it’s easier than we would like to admit to lose track of of a child for a moment or two. Each child having a buddy makes it harder to lose track and easier to keep children safe.
